An Exclusive Conversation with Shakira Johnson about "Self Love"

In a world where Q&A interviews often follow the same formula, we take a different approach to unveil the unique journey of a remarkable figure in the fashion industry. Today, we present a captivating dialogue with Shakira Johnson, a rising star in the fashion and modeling scene. Our conversation delves deeper into her life, career, and her vision for the industry.

Hometown Roots and Aspirations:

Q. Shakira Johnson, could you share with us the city of your birth and upbringing?

A. Hailing from Baltimore, MD.

Origins of Influence and Modeling Debut:

Q. What were the beginnings of your modeling journey, and when did it all commence?

A. My modeling journey began in my early twenties, under the expert tutelage of Ms. Jearlean Taylor, a Model, Cancer Survivor, and the owner of J & Company Christian Modeling. My initial influence stemmed from a desire to boost my self-confidence.

Commencing Your Career:

Q. Starting from the ground up, can you recall your very first job?

A. My first job was quite the adventure, to say the least. I got my start at Burger King, an experience that shaped my journey in unexpected ways.

Q. In your interactions with seasoned models, what valuable advice has resonated with you?

A. The importance of professionalism and understanding that as a model, I represent not only myself but also the brands I work with. Carrying my confidence in every facet of my work, whether on the runway or off, has been instrumental.

Memorable Challenges:

Q. What stands out as the most memorable challenge you've faced as a model?

A. Mastering poses has proven to be quite a demanding task. The endurance required to hold poses for extended periods can be challenging and even uncomfortable. However, the end result, a beautiful masterpiece, is profoundly rewarding.

Fostering the Spark of Modeling:

Q. How did your interest in modeling develop and shape your personal journey?

A. Modeling became my outlet for personal growth, allowing me to build confidence, believe in myself, and overcome challenges. It felt like a natural path to follow.

Dream Clients and Aspirations:

Q. If you could choose dream clients to style or model for, who would they be?

A. In styling, I'd love to work with KeKe Wyatt, Gabby Sidibe, Fantasia, and, optimistically, even Michelle Obama. Each of them boasts unique style preferences that would inspire me to push beyond my creative boundaries. As a model, I aspire to collaborate with Eloquii, Macy's, Nordstrom, Torrid, and Ashley Stewart – all remarkable companies housing the best of brands.

Advice for Aspiring Models:

Q. What advice would you offer to those aspiring to embark on a modeling journey?

A. My advice would be to invest in yourself, learn everything you can, and embrace your unique gifts and talents. Don't let the fear of rejection hinder you from pursuing your dreams.

Anticipated Fashion Shows and Events:

Q. What upcoming fashion events are you eagerly anticipating?

A. I'm looking forward to making my mark at NYFW and Milan Fashion Week next year, and I'm also excited about hosting the "Land of Kouture" Fashion Gala next Spring. This event will feature the talented KeKe Wyatt and will have a special focus on honoring survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault on April 7, 2024, in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dream Ambassadorship and Favorite Designers:

Q. If you could choose a fashion brand to be an ambassador for, which one would it be?

A. Tiffany & Co., Macy's, Bloomingdales, Eloquii, Torrid, and Nordstrom are just a few of my dream ambassadorships. Some of my favorite designers include Christian Siriano, Betsey Johnson, Jon Marc, JK Fashion Closet, Alek Risimnic Couture, and Syeko Design House.

Style Icons and Personal Style:

Q. Who are some of your style icons, and how would you describe your own personal style?

A. I admire the style of Jekalyn Carr, Janelle Monae, Queen Latifah, and Goo Goo. Their unique styles have left a lasting impression on me.

My personal style is versatile, depending on the occasion and my mood. I love experimenting with designer chic, glam chic, corporate attire, and occasionally mixing prints or adding a pop of color.
