In the heart of Memphis, where community, creativity, and education meet, Candyland Arts & Academics, Inc. stands as a beacon of color and compassion. Founded by Candy Johnson, this dynamic organization is transforming how youth engage with art, learning, and self-expression.
From themed events that light up the city to hands-on programs blending art and academics, Candyland creates experiences that spark imagination and growth. For Candy, this is more than a business, it’s a calling rooted in family, music, and mentorship.

“As the oldest female cousin, I was the babysitter in my family,” Johnson recalls. “That’s where my passion for working with children began. Later, when I started DJing, I realized the arts could be a bridge, a way to connect with youth and inspire them to learn in creative ways.”
Her journey weaves through the music industry, teaching, and community service, each chapter refining her purpose. What began as a spring break youth project during her first master’s program in sociology evolved into Camp Candyland in New York City. Now based in Memphis, Candy expanded that dream into Candyland Arts & Academics, Inc., an organization dedicated to nurturing tomorrow’s leaders.
Candyland isn’t just a brand—it’s an energy. Parents, sponsors, and youth describe the experience as a family affair, where every event feels like a celebration of culture, creativity, and connection. From monthly themed gatherings to their popular Movie and Game Nights at the Fieldstone Apartments Mini Malco Theater, Candyland continues to give local youth a space to learn, laugh, and belong.

“Our youth are tomorrow’s leaders,” Johnson emphasizes. “We must guide them, sow into them, and develop their minds to be innovative thinkers and creators of a brighter tomorrow.”
For Candy, the mission is clear: empower the next generation to dream bigger, create boldly, and lead with heart.
