From DJ to Community Leader: The Journey of Carolyn "Ms. Candy" Johnson

Dropping the Beats,

Ms. Candy's career took off straight out of high school when she became a DJ for hip-hop legend Sweet Tee. This marked her entry into the world of music and entertainment, where she quickly made her mark. She also served as a Tour Coordinator for P.T. Entertainment/Pebbitone Music, working with major artists such as TLC, Toni Braxton, Johnny Gill, and Whitney Houston. Her exceptional coordination skills were recognized by Dick Clarke Productions when she managed the performance of these artists at the 1991 Atlanta Flag Jam, a historic event where the Olympic Torch made its journey from Barcelona to the USA in Atlanta.


Upon returning to New York City, Ms. Candy embarked on an academic journey, earning five college degrees from the City University of New York.


Queens College. Her impressive list of degrees includes three Bachelor's Degrees in Sociology, English, and Theatre Dance, a Master of Arts in Sociology, and a Master of Science in Secondary Education and Youth Services. This commitment to education laid the foundation for her later career in social work and youth services.


Ms. Candy's passion for making a difference in the lives of young people led her to spend 12 years as a Case Manager and Social Worker. She then dedicated nine years to serving as a Special Education Substitute Teacher in challenging schools across Districts 27, 28, and 29. Her specialization in Multi-Cultural Studies and her work with K-3rd Grade and 6th Grade ELA/History students demonstrated her deep commitment to educational equity and inclusivity.


Ms. Candy's unwavering dedication to youth services has not gone unnoticed. She has received accolades such as the 2021 Russell L. Carson Service Award and the 2019 Melanin Magic Gala Women Of Distinction Award. Her leadership and community involvement have been recognized through several City Council Member Proclamations, acknowledging her outstanding community leadership. She has also secured grants for projects like Ballroom BaSix for 6th Grade Afterschool Dancers, further contributing to the enrichment of young lives.


In her latest role, Ms. Candy serves on the Building Equity (BE) Advisory Council for the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) in Jamaica, Queens, New York. Her participation in this council exemplifies her ongoing commitment to the betterment of her community, promoting diversity, inclusion, and the arts.
